Rod McNicol Speaker
Born in 1946, Rod McNicol studied photography at Prahran College in the 1970s and completed an MFA at Monash University in 2007. Since 1978 he has lived and worked in an old warehouse/studio in Fitzroy where for more than four decades he has pursued his passion for photographic portraiture. McNicol has always drawn his subjects from the vibrant inner-city life around him. His photographs have a gentle stillness tempered by an unrelenting directness that pares portraiture back to something of its bare essence.
He won the Australian Photographic Portrait Prize at the AGNSW in 2004, and the 2012 National Photographic Portrait Prize at the NPG, Canberra. He has works in major public collections here and overseas.
