About The Art Gallery of Ballarat

The Art Gallery of Ballarat is truly one of Australia’s great galleries. It is not only the oldest and largest regional gallery but, more importantly, one of the most welcoming and engaging. Located in the heart of Ballarat, the Gallery is beloved by visitors and residents alike as the heart of this creative city.

In Conversation: Suzanne McRae with Kiri Smart Past Event

Presented by The Art Gallery of Ballarat

Back in the mid-1990s, a first-year student walking through a university art school in a corduroy A-line mini skirt and impractical heels encountered a fellow student wearing a Renaissance gown, completely covered in clay, puffed sleeves rolled up, wrestling her latest creation – and a friendship was born.

Join Gallery Curator Kiri Smart as she talks with her friend and colleague Suzanne McRae, AKA Hip Hip Decay, about McRae’s unconventional approach to the arts world and her unwavering adherence to the ‘stay true to your path’ approach to life, and how she has built a flourishing studio practice, with her wild and whimsical anthropomorphic sculptures collected by devotees around the world.

Suzanne McRae Speaker

Suzanne McRae is drawn to and lives with the sentimentality and haunting nature of memory, beautiful things now decrepit, the Victorian grace of our great grandparents long gone – antique upholstery, old lace and stained velvets; anthropomorphic creatures existing between the animal and human world.

Kiri Smart Speaker

Kiri Smart, the newly appointed Curator at the Art Gallery is a total born-again ‘Ballaratian’. Two decades of curating and co-ordinating exhibitions and events highlighting the work of local and emerging artists have ignited a life-long passion for arts advocacy in the region. She is happy to talk about it – just ask anyone she knows!
