ABDA exists to support Australian book designers – to promote their work to, and connect with, the broader publishing community. In addition, we aim to discover and foster emerging talent. Through our public talks and workshops, digital showcases and the national annual Book Design Awards, ABDA provides a dynamic network for industry professionals.

A New Perspective on Publishing Past Event
Book publishing has often been considered traditional, conservative and high-brow – the purview of (mostly white) intellectuals – where change happens slowly or, sometimes, not at all.
But in recent years design thinking, or creative thinking, has become increasingly important to a variety of companies from banking to insurance, so what does publishing stand to learn from these winds of change?
Join book designers, art directors and publishers Mark Campbell, Pooja Desai and Vaughan Mossop as they discuss their own unique trajectories from designer to publisher, and how new creative perspectives could help shape the industry of the future through increased diversity, inclusion and paradigm-flipping.
Mark Campbell Speaker
Mark is the Creative Director at HarperCollins ANZ where he runs the award-winning HarperCollins Design Studio and also publishes a list of books under the newly-created Harper by Design imprint. He is a past President of the Australian Book Designers Association (ABDA) and has worked in design and project management across theatre, film, animation and publishing, for companies like Bazmark Inq., Animal Logic and Hardie Grant Books. He has been a guest presenter for AGDA, UTS, RMIT, Melbourne Writer’s Festival and AdobeMAX 2020, a committee member of industry initiatives like Open Book, Australia Reads and the Australian Book Industry Awards, and a member of the judging panel for the World Illustration Awards 2021.
Pooja Desai Speaker
Pooja is the Head of Design at Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing where she also publishes books into a ground-breaking list called Bright Light. Pooja is an award-winning designer and the recipient of the 2021 ABIA Rising Star award in recognition of her achievements within the publishing industry. A past secretary of ABDA, Pooja has also promoted book design through speaking events at Geelong Design Week, Editors Victoria, and the Independent Publishing Conference. She hates peas and loves collecting vases.
Vaughan Mossop Speaker
Vaughan Mossop is an award-winning book designer, illustrator and the current art director for Dumbo Feather. In 2020 he formed the publishing company Somekind Press, breaking the mould when it comes to contemporary book design and has flipped the traditional publishing model on its head, in a bid to help local, national and international restaurants and cafes develop an extra income stream during the pandemic.
