The New Curator Past Event
The New Curator: Exhibiting Architecture and Design examines the challenges inherent in exhibiting design ideas. Traditionally, exhibitions of architecture and design have predominantly focused on displaying finished outcomes or communicating a work through representation. In this new book, Fleur Watson unveils the emergence of the ‘new curator’. Instead of exhibiting finished works or artefacts, the rise of ‘performative curation’ provides a space where experimental methods for encountering design ideas are being tested. Here, the role of the curator is not that of ‘custodian’ or ‘expert’ but with the intent to create a shared space of encounter with audiences. To illustrate this phenomenon, the book explores ational range of exhibitions. Divided into six themes, a series of project profiles are contextualized through conversations with influential curators and cultural producers such as Paola Antonelli, Kayoko Ota, Mimi Zeiger, Catherine Ince, Aric Chen, Zoë Ryan, Beatrice Leanza, Prem Krishnamurthy, Marina Otero Verzier, Brook Andrew, Carroll Go-Sam, Rory Hyde, Eva Franch i Gilabert, Patti Anahory and Paula Nascimento.
For this launch event at URO Bookshop, author Fleur Watson will introduce the themes, ideas and key projects explored in The New Curator, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Esther Anatolitis with Watson, Rory Hyde, Kate Goodwin, Su san Cohn, Aric Chen and Beatrice Leanza – all are contributors featured within the book. The event will conclude with a book signing and drinks.
Fleur Watson Speaker
Fleur Watson (PhD) is Executive Director and Curator for the Centre for Architecture Victoria | Open House Melbourne. Fleur is formerly Curator at RMIT Design Hub Gallery and is currently Honorary University Fellow in the School of Art, RMIT University. She is the author of The New Curator: Exhibiting Architecture & Design and Series Editor for Editions: Australian Architecture Monographs published by Thames & Hudson.
Esther Anatolitis Speaker
Esther Anatolitis heads Test Pattern, a consultancy focused on creative strategy, practice and precincts. She is Deputy Chair of Contemporary Arts Precincts, Honorary Associate Professor at RMIT School of Art, and a regular external examiner and critic at RMIT Architecture + Design. Her book Place, Practice, Politics (2022) is published in the Spurbuchverlag Art Architecture Design Research series.
Rory Hyde Speaker
Rory Hyde is associate professor in architecture, curatorial design and practice at the University of Melbourne, and design advocate for the Mayor of London. From 2013 to 2020 he was the curator of contemporary architecture and urbanism at the V&A Museum.
Su san Cohn Speaker
Su san Cohn is an artist with multiple personalities – jeweller, craftsperson, designer, curator, writer, performer. Living on Wurundjeri land in Naarm Melbourne, she brings a conceptual approach to her work together with a keen interest in contemporary culture and technology. Cohn is represented by Anna Schwartz Gallery, Naarm Melbourne.
Aric Chen Speaker
Aric Chen is General and Artistic Director of Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Dutch national museum and institute for architecture, design and digital culture, in Rotterdam.
Beatrice Leanza Speaker
Beatrice Leanza is a cultural strategist, curator and critic with a background in Asian studies who was based in Beijing for 17 years. She served as executive director of maat – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, Lisbon (2019-2021), creative director of Beijing Design Week (2013-2016) and co-founded The Global School, the first independent institute for interdisciplinary creative research established in the PRC.
Kate Goodwin Speaker
Kate Goodwin is a Professor of Practice in Architecture at the University of Sydney and curatorial lead at the Tin Sheds Gallery. Former Head of Architecture and Heinz Curator at the Royal Academy of Arts in London where she curated numerous exhibitions, including Sensing Spaces.
