Performing Poetics: Reading Group Past Event
This session explores two distinct but linked practices of creative and communal learning and making – poetry and the reading group.
A reading group is a space for solidarity-building and shared learning, one that has the capacity to sit outside or against traditional institutions. When a reading group sits alongside poetry practice, the two can constitute radical creative possibilities rooted in community, a potential register of or salve for the myriad ways we live and work and be under capitalism.
In two one-hour sessions, Holly Childs and Georgia Kartas/Saint Jorge will each share an aspect of their own practice and learning, exploring different ways we can think about the radical implications of reading collectively, and the relationship between the intellectual and the political to poetry.
This event is part of the Melbourne Art Book Fair highlight program Performing Poetics.
Holly Childs Speaker
Holly Childs is a writer and artist. In 2021 she released Gnarled Roots alongside Gediminas Žygus, an album exploring 21st-century mythologies. In 2020 together they released Hydrangea, an album using narrative fracture as a structure for talking about intimacy and reality bubbles. She is the author of two books: No Limit published by Hologram and Danklands published by Arcadia Missa. She is an alumna of The New Normal at Strelka Institute (Moscow), holds a Masters in Film, Design and Politics from Sandberg Instituut (Amsterdam) and has previously been a Jacuzzi Associate Artist (Amsterdam), a producer at Next Wave (Naarm/Melbourne), and a Gertrude Contemporary studio holder (Naarm/Melbourne).
Georgia Kartas/Saint Jorge Speaker
Georgia Kartas/Saint Jorge is a poet and performer. Their research explores the relationship between quantum physics and metaphysics, as a pathway to radical re-worlding. They are a 2020–21 Wheeler Centre Hot Desk fellow, bookseller, tarot reader, and co-curator of Thin Red Lines, a quarterly poetry event in Naarm
Elena Gomez Facilitator
Elena Gomez is the author of Admit the Joyous Passion of Revolt (Puncher & Wattmann), Body of Work (Cordite) and several chapbooks and pamphlets.
