performing poetics: no more talk Past Event
no more poetry is an independent poetry and art press based in Naarm run by daniel ward and Joshua Edward. The press primarily focuses on debut collections of poetry from local artists along with an annual magazine traversing an array of both local and international visual and text-based ephemera. Joining the editing team for a reading and informal discussion will be contributing artists Carmen-Sibha Keiso, Lia Dewey Morgan and Spencer Lai. The talk aims to share in new work, speak to the artists’ processes and motivations and explore relationships between their art-making and poetry.
This event is part of the Melbourne Art Book Fair highlight program Performing Poetics.
Carmen-Sibha Keiso Speaker
Carmen-Sibha Keiso is a multimedia artist, writer and curator working in performance, video and text. Their practice functions as a reflexive mise-en-scéne wherein current socio-political and global cultural industries are fused with the semantics of social performativity. Keiso typically adopts a ficto-critical voice of ‘millennial diaspora’ to divulge the way in which we analyse and observe the self within these spheres; forming script into monologue.
Keiso directs Read the Room, an expanded literary practice space that hosts writing workshops, experimental lectures, screenings, readings and exhibitions in Melbourne. They previously presented a lecture as part of the Writing & Concepts 2019 series and have been published by Form IV, Lieu Journal, No More Poetry, and Montez Press.
Lia Dewey Morgan Speaker
Lia Dewey Morgan is a trans poetess grounded in Naarm (so-called Melbourne). Her work embraces her trans body as an incubator for resilience through extreme crisis. Hybridising contemporary and ancient poetic practices accumulated throughout her life, Morgan works to develop a sincere response to the profound intensity of our time. With her song, she hopes to inspire a sense of compassion, vulnerability and determination.
Spencer Lai Speaker
Spencer Lai is a Naarm/Melbourne based artist, curator and writer. They graduated with a BFA (with Honours) from The Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne in 2014. Spencer Lai’s practice navigates the visual lexicon of design, fashion, and window display, with specific interest in subcultural identities and aesthetic cultures. Their process involves the collation and editing of found/personal materials, objects and clothing to reflect and disseminate narratives surrounding consumer cultural consciousness
Joshua Edward Speaker
Joshua Edward is one of two Editors at no more poetry. Joshua is also one half of creative duo IchikawaEdward having presented creative outcomes in Melbourne, Berlin, Sydney & New York. Recent shows include today the fields are, empty and silent (DISCORDIA Gallery, 2021-2022) Connecting in the Grey Zone (Blindside Gallery, 2019) & Art Biesenthal (Berlin, 2019).
daniel ward Speaker
daniel ward is a poet and musician. they are one of two Editors at no more poetry. daniel is part of the experimental music collective bodies of divine infinite eternal spirit. they have had work published in Cordite, Sick Leave and Lor Journal, amongst other places.
