The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) plays an inspirational and critical role investing in our artistic and wider communities, leading the cultural conversation and setting the agenda for contemporary art.
DAS BOOT: Artist Car Boot Fair Past Event
As a community event and closing celebration for ACCA’s major project Who’s Afraid of Public Space?, ACCA will activate the public outdoor space surrounding the gallery with DAS BOOT, a one-day-only artist car boot sale, curated by Melbourne-based artists Oscar Perry and Esther Stewart.
Following the success of Das Boot, developed by Perry and Stewart as part of Next Wave Festival in 2014, DAS BOOT: Artist Car Boot Fair at ACCA will utilise the format of a weekend market and car boot sale to present the work of independent Melbourne-based artists, creating an opportunity to engage both the local artistic community and wider public, as well as for artists to reach new audiences and to benefit directly from the sales of their work.
Situated outside the gallery walls, and within proximity to the Melbourne Arts Precinct and wider city surrounds, DAS BOOT: Artist Car Boot Fair invites the public to consider the role of art in public space and everyday life, outside of an institutional or gallery context.
Oscar Perry Curator
Oscar Perry is a painter who extends the expressive potential of abstraction (including sculpture, text, spoken word and found images) to incorporate social, historical and cultural dimensions. Social contexts around art making and art exhibitions are central to his practice. Perry has initiated a number of curatorial projects including Beach Marvin III, Crazy Arms Hotel, Melbourne (2018), Coq au Vin, an exhibition space with an internationally-focused program in an outdoor chicken coup in Daylesford (2015) and Das Boot (with fellow artist Esther Stewart), an artist car boot fair as part of Next Wave Festival, Melbourne (2014). Perry was included in the survey exhibition of contemporary Australian painting, Painting. More Painting, at ACCA, Melbourne (2016).

Stewart is currently completing a Master of Architecture at The University of Melbourne and holds a Master of Cultural and Arts Management and BFA (Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts.
